HITA, Oita Prefecture--Despite the explosive popularity of his manga series "Attack on Titan," Hajime Isayama was relatively unknown in his hometown here in southern Japan.
But that has changed with an exhibition featuring illustrations from the series.
The artist, now 26, made a name for himself with his post-apocalyptic manga series about young boys and girls fighting hopeless battles against flesh-eating giants.
The exhibition will run until May 6 at Bungo Oyama Hibiki no Sato, a resort facility in the city's Oyama district, where Isayama was born.
In total, 28 illustrations--exact copies of the original manuscripts used for printing--were selected by Isayama for display in a passageway on the first floor of the complex, which is equipped with "onsen" hot spring baths.
The pictures portray the furious action with gigantic monsters, as well as scenes of children fighting for their lives.
Isayama started drawing manga when he was attending prefectural Hita Rinko Senior High School. After graduation, he went on to study his craft at a vocational school in Fukuoka.
Isayama penned a one-shot comic version of "Attack on Titan" while in school, and came to Tokyo after it received an honorable mention at a manga contest hosted by a comic magazine.
He continued to work on his manga while working at a part-time job.
He made his professional debut five years ago.
When Isayama returned home for the New Year holiday season, he paid a visit to Oyama Yume-Kobo, a company which runs the Hibiki no Sato resort, with his woodwork designer father.
Zenpachiro Mitoma, president of Oyama Yume-Kobo, and other staff members came up with the idea for the mini-exhibition.
"We have a lot of things that we take pride in, such as agricultural and processed products, but now we have something else that we can brag about," Mitoma said. "We want to spread the word to as many as people as posible."
A senior member of the company went to Tokyo to negotiate terms with Kodansha Ltd. for the exhibition.
Because Isayama's contract with Kodansha does not allow original manuscripts to be removed from the premises, the publisher agreed to provide exact copies for the project.
"He is not widely known, even in his hometown of Hita. We are delighted to give our support," said Ryo Tokieda, a Kodansha employee in charge of property management.
The exhibition winds up on May 6. Admission is free.
