Toyota has introduced a new vision for the internal combustion engine, focusing on lean compact engines that run on green fuels like hydrogen and bioethanol or pair with zero-emissions electric motors in hybrids. This announcement was made during a three-hour presentation in Tokyo, where Toyota's Chief Executive Koji Sato emphasized the engine's optimization for the electrification era, aiming to advance carbon neutrality.
The automotive industry is seeing a strong push towards fully electric vehicles, with China leading the charge and companies like BYD competing with Tesla. Despite this trend, Toyota plans to enhance its hybrid technology, with future models featuring electric motors as the main driving power. Toyota's well-known Prius already combines a gas engine with an electric motor for a cleaner drive.
Toyota's allies, Subaru Corp. and Mazda Motor Corp., also showcased their plans for ecological engines. Mazda is adapting its rotary engine for electric vehicles, while Subaru continues to develop its smaller horizontally opposed engine. The executives highlighted the diverse global energy supply conditions and the significant economic impact of a sudden shift to electric cars. Professor Takahiro Fujimoto of Waseda University noted the challenges and long-term nature of achieving carbon neutrality, pointing out that while innovations in BEVs are necessary, they are not the sole solution.
